Boosting Female Representation In The Construction Industry With Thomas & Adamson This International Women’s Day

Today marks International Women’s Day – a day that encourages society – as well as us all, individually – to help accelerate women’s equality.

For the construction sector, this inequality is significant; just 14 percent of UK construction jobs are held by women while only 22 per cent are at board member level.

Armed with this insight, we worked with our construction client Thomas & Adamson to host an industry summit to assess the state of the sector and importantly, develop solutions to encourage greater female recruitment and representation.

We commissioned renowned Scottish broadcaster Heather Suttie to host the event which was attended by a mix of construction industry professionals, resulting in a powerful and insightful discussion – calling out for education providers to introduce construction into the curriculum at primary school level, when children start to abandon ‘fantasy’ careers and before adopting gender-based stereotypes.

In addition, participants cited the importance of highlighting to the more environmentally conscious younger generation, the key role the construction sector can play in fighting climate change.

We have already secured a BBC interview with Thomas & Adamson's Heather Holbrook this international women’s day to talk about this – watch this space for more coverage and future change!
